Free training for town centre businesses in Blackburn21st February 2007 Celia Hulme of East Lancashire Deaf Society explains: “There are almost 30,000 people in Blackburn with a hearing loss. Like all customers, they prefer shops and services that understand and meet their needs. Businesses who take the time to find out how to make life better for deaf people will get their business.” Training is specifically tailored, to address the issues that deaf people will face using a specific business, and also helps staff to identify types of deafness and different ways of communicating. And with sessions designed for anywhere between an hour and a full day, training can be arranged to suit almost anyone. Some major stores in Blackburn have already signed up, but organisers stress that all types and sizes of shops and services are welcome to apply. Councillor Andy Kay, executive member for regeneration explains: “We want to make the town welcoming for everyone, and every business has a part to play. Deaf awareness training will help businesses serve their customers better, and that encourages more people to shop in Blackburn.” To find out more about the training, contact Michael Stead at East Lancashire Deaf Society on (01254) 844550 or email michael.stead@elds.org.uk
